Frequently Asked Questions about REU
- Application
- The career essay is an extremely important part of the selection criteria and the research mentors expect a well written one page (minimum) composition. It is strongly recommended that applicants review the recent publications of the mentor(s) selected on the application. Applicants should prepare their essay with a word processing program and paste it into the appropriate box.
- Students graduating in May/June 2008 are not eligible for this program.
- Stipend
- Each participant will receive a $4000 stipend disbursed into two equal checks at the end of June and July.
- Travel Subsidy
- Roundtrip airfare is provided.
- Student Housing
- Students will reside in air conditioned double occupancy dormitory rooms located on campus. Each suite contains two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. The dormitories are a short walk from the research laboratories. A Rebel card with $300 will be provided for meals. A detailed description of the housing available for summer conferences is available online. Students will need to cover the cost of a parking pass ($5.00 per week).
- REU students should bring twin sheets, pillow cases and a blanket.
- REU students will have full access to the library, recreation center and student union.
- There will be several informal social events and field trips to fragile desert ecosystems throughout the 10 week session.
- Unfortunately, there is no married student housing at UNLV.
- Pets are not allowed in the dorm.
- The daily temperature may exceed 110ºF, but all facilities are air conditioned.
- A bicycle is an excellent way to get around campus.
- Direct deposit of student summer intern checks is not possible at this time.
- Undergraduate Research Credit
- Students may enroll in Biol 492 Undergraduate Research in order to receive 1 credit for transfer to their own institution.
