Dr. Paul J. Schulte (School of Life Sciences) and Dr. David G. Costa (Department of Mathematical Sciences, UNLV) were awarded a three-year, $240,000 grant by the National Science Foundation to introduce UNLV undergraduate students to a curricular and research experience centered around mathematical biology. Students with an introductory background in mathematics (including Calculus) and biology will take additional coursework in biomathematics, and join a multidisciplinary group of faculty and graduate students collaborating on various research projects. The students in the program will present the results of their investigations at an annual one-day conference of graduate and undergraduate students. Further, a seminar series entitled Mathematics and Biology - An Interface for the 21st Century will expose undergraduate and graduate students and faculty to the work of prominent researchers in mathematical biology.
