Dr. Dennis A. Bazylinski, Director of the School of Life Sciences, and Dr. Brian H. Lower (Ohio State University) were awarded a three-year, $404,000 grant by the National Science Foundation to study magnetotactic bacteria.
Magnetotactic bacteria are those whose movements are influenced by magnetic fields. These bacteria mineralize intracellular crystals of magnetic minerals (magnetite and/or greigite) that are encased in a membrane. Despite the discovery of magnetotactic bacteria more than 30 years ago, the mechanism for magnetite biomineralization in these microorganisms remains unknown. Drs. Bazylinski and Lower will use recently developed techniques to determine the molecular mechanism for the biomineralization of magnetite crystals in magnetotactic bacteria.
In addition to effectively leading the School of Life Sciences during challenging economic times, Dr. Bazylinski maintains a prestigious and well-funded research program in his field of study, qualities that reflect his commitment to excellence.
