School of Life Sciences Associate Professor Dr. Brian P. Hedlund was awarded the 2010 Nevada Regents' Rising Researcher Award. Recipients of this prestigious honor must have received a doctorate or terminal degree within the last ten years and have at least five years of service in an institution of the Nevada System of Higher Education (Desert Research Institute, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, University of Nevada, Reno). Awardees are selected based on their early-career accomplishments and potential for future advancement and recognition in research. Dr. Hedlund investigates the microbiology and geochemistry of hot spring ecosystems in the western United States, particularly in the Great Basin and Yellowstone National Park. His research is funded by federal grants from the United States Department of Energy, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the National Science Foundation (Faculty Early Career Development Award).
Dr. Hedlund's achievement marks the second consecutive year that a faculty member from the School of Life Sciences receives the Nevada Regents' Rising Researcher Award, as last year the honor went to Associate Professor Dr. Frank van Breukelen.
